Baroque & Beyond

2019-2020 Concert Dates

Art of Improvisation

3:00pm, October 13, 2019

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

300 E. Rosemary Street, Chapel Hill

Featuring Roseen Giles, baroque flute, in a program of music devoted to the art of ornamentation. Corelli’s florid writing for Sonata Op. 5 no. 1 shows a highly elaborate version written above the simple melody. Teleman’s Methodical Sonatas provide both simple and complex examples to guide musicians in creating their own inspired improvisations. The unmeasured preludes and figured bass sonatas of the harpsichord repertoire offer further ideas. Roseen is joined by baroque cellist Stephanie Vial, violinist Andrew Bonner, harpsichordist Beverly Biggs, and soprano Florence Peacock.
