Phillips House, c.1856
407 E. Franklin Street
The Phillips House was Samuel F. Phillips’ home and is located adjacent to the Phillips Law Office and within the same block. A well-known lawyer across the state, Phillips served as the Speaker of the State House of Commons. Samuel’s sister, Cornelia Phillips Spencer, watched the home while Samuel was in Raleigh. Cornelia Phillips Spencer is a noted social historian who helped to reopen the University of North Carolina after Reconstruction. With its purpose reimagined, today, the home is now the Tri Delta sorority house.
