ARTIST'S RECEPTION

Saturday,  July 12, 2025

from 2 to 4 pm

Preservation Chapel Hill at Horace Williams House is pleased to welcome Makala Aayana as its July exhibiting artist. Based in Durham, N.C., Makala uses mixed media – painting, collage, photography and wood block printing – as tools for expressing identity, self-exploration and remembrance. Her exhibition is a visual memoir encapsulating influential elements in her upbringing in the South, both  the women responsible for her “becoming” and her family’s rich Caribbean American heritage. Her work is also influenced by her current community connections and a belief that holistic wellness promotes personal transformation. She writes “I thrive in creative spaces that celebrate Blackness, sustainability, wellness and the collective power of storytelling”.

Further details about the exhibition and viewing, on Fridays from 10 - 4, and by appointment, is available on www.preservationchapelhill.org
